Handy 2 Maintenance

I've been using Handy ever since the first generation, but after extended use, it starts making a loud "clunking" noise. The cause is the reed screw.

The grease that was initially applied properly diminishes over time, leading to squeaking and loud banging noises. Applying grease to the lead screws is a well-known maintenance practice among advanced users, but this information is rarely shared with general users or beginners. As a result, many people have never performed this maintenance.

I'm one of those people; I used the original Handy for many years, and it grew into a loud machine without any maintenance (lol). Honestly, I think its durability, which allowed me to continue using it without it breaking down, is amazing.

One reason maintenance didn't become widespread among beginners was that manufacturers didn't officially publish the procedures. They might have provided the information if you inquired, but that was only within a few niche forums and wasn't widely known.

Handy has now released an official maintenance video and a dedicated maintenance kit. Since the Handy 2 is an expensive machine, I wanted to use it for as long as possible, and ideally without that clicking sound, so this was great news for me.

I immediately ordered the official maintenance kit and tried it out. The procedure itself is very simple. However, there were some points to be aware of and some parts that were a little confusing, so I'd like to write an explanatory article along with a video to share with other Handy users.

How to use the Handy Maintenance Kit

At the time of this review, there were no shops in Japan that carried the product, so I ordered it from the Norwegian flagship store. It costs $35, but with shipping, the price ended up being about double that.

Since ordering it later will incur shipping costs, we recommend purchasing it at the same time as the hand2 if you are planning to buy it.

I opened the box. Each item is neatly placed within its designated compartment.

I took everything out of the box. It contained the instruction manual, one bottle of lead screw grease, three bottles of support rod oil, three syringes for the support oil rod, and two small brushes.

If you look into the groove that forms the rail section of the main body, you can see the lead screw.

Dispense a small amount of grease for the lead screw onto the tip of a brush.

Insert a brush dipped in grease into the groove and apply the grease to the lead screw. Once one side is wet, remove the brush, apply a small amount of grease to it, and apply it to the remaining side.

The tip of the brush will get covered in black dirt, but this is not a problem.

Locate the indentation on the support rod where you will inject oil. It's very hard to see, but you can feel a slight indentation if you touch it with your hand.

There are two holes, located slightly in front of the slider when it's turned all the way down. These are two round holes (indentations). They're difficult to see in the photo, but should be easy to spot with the naked eye.

Remove the cap from the oil bottle for the support rod and attach the syringe to the tip. This syringe seems to have been hastily made, as it doesn't fit the oil properly and easily comes off if inserted at an angle or with a little force.

While the filming is done with one hand, when injecting, it's better to insert the needle straight in and hold the connection between the syringe and the oil with your hand to reduce the risk of it coming loose.

Insert the oil into the hole and push for about 3 seconds to inject the oil. Inject the oil into both holes.

Finally, move the slider up and down a few times. This will distribute the oil and grease evenly. Wipe off any oil or grease from the main unit with a towel, and the maintenance is complete.

After use, remove the syringe and replace the oil cap on the maintenance kit before storing it. The syringe is particularly easy to lose, so we recommend keeping it in some kind of case.

Despite being a consistently high-priced product, information about handy2 is scarce, and its appeal is still not being effectively communicated.

Therefore, after using it for more than six months, and continuing to use it for more than two months since the fixing device was made, I have compiled a progress review of handy2 , highlighting its strengths and any points of concern.
